Obuasi Gold Mine is 65 km by road from Kumasi or 200 km north-west of Accra amid the township of Obuasi. Mining at Obuasi has been active for over 110 years and currently producing an approximate 300k oz. per annum.

Byrnecut Underground Ghana Ltd and AngloGold Ashanti entered into alliance style contract.

Byrnecut specialises in mechanised development, a method previously not practised onsite. Predominantly hand held methods and a complex shaft system had been historically used to mine the ore body. Byrnecut’s main priority was to commence and complete the Obuasi Deeps Decline providing a new more efficient access to the extensive mine workings.

Byrnecut’s scope of works included portal construction, decline and lateral development and rehabilitation. Byrnecut also managed all fleet maintenance and aimed to introduce mechanised long hole stoping methods.

Training and assessing of the Ghanaian work force was also completed by Byrnecut.
