North Mara Gold Mine is located in the north-western part of Tanzania in the Mara region near the town of Tarime, some 100km east of Lake Victoria and approximately 20 kilometres from the border with Kenya. The Gokona orebody is located some 11km from the North Mara process plant.
The approval to begin underground development at Gokona was made in April 2014, with the first portal blast being taken in early August. Byrnecut’s scope of works includes decline and lateral development, stope production, haulage and equipment maintenance. The mine is an underground high speed mechanised trackless operation and will use long-hole stoping as its principal stoping method.
